U-turn as GKFX leaves UK

Last month, when financefeeds probed GKFX UK’s imminent closure, the firm denied it, however on may 24 this year, all accounts will either be transferred to malta or closed

“should I stay or should I go?” was the famous question sung by mick jones in 1981.

Today in may 2019, however, this adage could be applied a long established retail FX brokerage and its decision to close its FCA regulated operations.

Turkish-owned GKFX has had presence in london for several years, its FCA regulated operations at the prestigious bevis marks house having been a mainstay during the company’s expansion of its partners network across mainland china, however this week, according to many of its clients, signals the end of an era for the company.

On friday last week, several clients of the firm received an official notification that GKFX is in the process of closing its UK operations, and is no longer accepting new customers.

Financefeeds was approached by a software engineer based in scandinavia who has a longstanding retail FX and CFD trading account with GKFX’s london office, as he received a notification by email that clients of GKFX’s london office would be offered a choice of either closing their account, or having it transferred to a subsidiary in malta.

The email to clients reads as follows:

Dear client
re: account closure and transfer notice

Following a review of GKFX financial services limited (GKFX UK) business strategy considering brexit and other recent regulatory developments, GKFX UK have decided to focus its business on the wholesale and professional market. As a result, we regret to inform you that GKFX UK will no longer be providing its trading services to retail and elective professional customers and are hereby giving you notice of intention to close your account by friday 24th may 2019 as per section 38 of our terms of business.
We appreciate that this may cause disruption and inconvenience for you and therefore GKFX UK has taken considerable steps to minimise any disruption and inconvenience as much as possible. GKFX UK has entered into an agreement with AKFX financial services ltd (AKFX), an affiliate of GKFX UK and member of the global capital group which will allow you to transfer your active positions to AKFX and keep your active positions open if you choose to do so.

AKFX is a financial brokerage firm registered in malta and regulated by maltese regulator, the malta financial services authority (MFSA). AKFX holds regulatory permissions that will enable it to provide substantially similar services to retail and elective professional customers (as compared to GKFX). We have prepared a comparison table below to illustrate any material differences in the services offered by GKFX UK and AKFX.

This corporate decision by GKFX has been one of interest to financefeeds for some time, largely due to our discovery of a notice that had appeared temporarily on the company’s UK website in mid-april, stating that GKFX was no longer accepting new customers to its british division.

This message remained on the company’s website for a very short time before being removed.

This notice was temporarily displayed on GKFX UK’s website last month, and then swiftly removed, yet new accounts were unavailable from UK IP addresses. The company denied any significance of this message, and at the time told us “business as usual”

At that time, financefeeds contacted UK CEO rob woolfe for clarification, to which mr woolfe replied “” as part of GKFX’s brexit strategy, we are considering a number of options and this message that prematurely appeared on our website is one of several under consideration. The message was immediately removed from our websites and no clients were or are affected.”

Therefore, it was the company’s official line at the time that the firm was indeed accepting new clients to its british entity and that it is operating absolutely as normal, thus no british clients need to open their accounts via the firm’s malta entity, as had been stated on the temporarily displayed message.

On april 15, 2019, financefeeds published that mr woolfe had further explained that the UK entity was absolutely operating as normal, and that GKFX had indicated that most certainly companies in the electronic trading business are indeed looking at their options with regard to rationalizing their operations post-brexit, however there is nothing to be too concerned about, and interestingly that the company had set the message live on its UK website in error.

Now, one month on, the firm has issued official notices via email to clients of its UK office, demonstrating that it had intended to close its UK operations.

One particular point to bear in mind is that since the original message was displayed and then swiftly removed from GKFX UK website in april, when attempting to open a demo account from a UK IP address without a VPN (I am in the UK – ed) the site does has not allowed a demo or live account to be established, instead going in a loop which was not addressed by the firm during our conversation this last month. Financefeeds at the time stated an intention to provide further clarity when that point has been covered, hence now it is clear.

The company had denied its imminent closure of its UK division, however GKFX is a massive market participant in china, and has been for several years. Many of my visits to the offices of medium sized introducing brokers (ibs) in second tier development cities across china has revealed longstanding and unshakable relationships with GKFX which was (until china began asking some of the bigger firms like FXCM to leave) the fourth largest international FX representative in china.

As that market becomes less friendly toward non-chinese brokerages, the UK division (chinese ibs often stipulate the existence of a british or australian base as a must for doing business with an overseas broker) may be superfluous to its main operations.

Many institutional providers of liquidity in london have speculated on this subject for some time, and there are regulatory ramblings to the tune that the firm has come under some degree of scrutiny by the FCA, an activity that it has been suggested commenced at the end of last year.

Financefeeds asked GKFX UK’s senior management for a comment on the matter, particularly as to why it was explained a month ago that the firm had no intention of leaving the UK, however no comment was provided.

GKFX’s official rationale cites brexit as the main factor, however this is very unlikely to be the actual reason for exiting the UK.

Indeed, it is our opinion that more brokerages will flock to the UK once it exits from the european union, some of which are already in the process of establishing operations in london.

Der bekannte broker GKFX hat sich vor einiger zeit dafür entschieden, london zu verlassen. Unabhängig davon, zu welcher einigung die britische regierung und die EU infolge des brexits letztendlich kommen werden, entschied sich der anbieter früh zu diesem schritt. GKFX geht davon aus, dass sich infolge des brexits einschränkungen für trader ergeben werden. Das institutionelle business soll allerdings vorerst weiter in großbritannien verbleiben.

Wechsel von GKFX UK zu GKFX europe

Alle trader, die bislang bei GKFX unter dem dach von GKFX UK gehandelt haben, werden künftig bei GKFX europe geführt. Aus datenschutzgründen ist dafür aber ein kostenfreier kontowechsel, bei dem aber keine mindesteinlage vorgesehen ist, notwendig. Die konten werden dann von GKFX UK zu GKFX europe mitsamt offener positionen und guthaben übertragen. Dieser vorgang ist bereits abgeschlossen.

AKFX financial services, ein broker aus malta, der vor einigen jahren von GKFX übernommen wurde, fungiert als ausführender broker für die handelsmarke GKFX europe. Für AKFX financial services ist die maltesische finanzaufsichtsbehörde MFSA zuständig. So unterliegen alle kunden von GKFX in europa weiterhin den EU-vorgaben.

Für trader ändert sich aber nach dem standortwechsel nicht viel, denn alle produkte und schulungsangebote bleiben bestehen. Die niederlassung von GKFX in deutschland ist mittlerweile auch teil von GKFX europe. Damit wird der broker auch von der bafin überwacht. Weiterhin ist auch das team der deutschen niederlassung für die deutschsprachigen kunden zuständig.

Auch wechsel nach frankfurt in betracht gezogen

GKFX hatte auch überlegt, frankfurt zum neuen hauptsitz zu machen, was aber mit blick auf die abgeltungssteuer ein nachteil für die kunden gewesen wäre. Der anbieter hätte diese direkt an die finanzämter abführen müssen. Durch den sitz auf malta muss jeder kunde die abgeltungssteuer weiter selbst im rahmen seiner steuererklärung abführen.

Der anbieter ist für den CFD-handel mit basiswerten wie rohstoffen oder aktien mit hebeln von bis zu 1:30 sowie spreads ab 0,6 pips bekannt. Kommissionen fallen nicht an und auch eine mindestkontogröße ist nicht vorgegeben. Bei GKFX können trader schon mit kleinen kontogrößen handeln. Außerdem besteht für sie die wahl unter drei kontoarten. GKFX ist zudem für zahlreiche tools, ein großes handelsangebot und viel schulungsmaterial mit aktuellen webinaren bekannt.

Broker mit XTB vergleichbar

Ähnlich ist auch XTB aufgestellt. Der anbieter aus warschau ist dort an der börse notiert und auch unter dem namen X-trade brokers bekannt. Der 2002 gegründete broker wird von der PFSA, der polnischen finanzaufsichtsbehörde, reguliert. Über die niederlassung in frankfurt besteht aber auch eine regulierung durch die bafin. Dazu kommen niederlassungen in zahlreichen weiteren ländern, die regulierungen durch die dortigen aufsichtsbehörden zur folge haben. Bei der einlagensicherung unterliegt der broker aber den vorgaben aus polen. Dies bedeutet, dass alle guthaben von bis zu 3.000 euro komplett geschützt sind. Guthaben bis zu einer höhe von 22.000 euro sind zu 90 prozent abgesichert.

Umfangreiches schulungsangebot

XTB ist ähnlich wie auch GKFX für sein umfangreiches angebot an schulungsmaterialien bekannt. Zahlreiche finanzinstrumente wie aktien, etfs oder cfds können bei XTB aus einer hand getradet werden. Trader können das gesamte handelsangebot über ein demokonto prüfen. Im STP-handel beginnen die spreads schon bei 0,1 pips, aber auch feste spreads ab zwei pips und variable spreads ab 0,7 pips sind je nach kontoart und basiswert möglich. Zum teil fallen weitere kosten und kommissionen an. Eine mindesteinzahlung gibt XTB nicht vor. Die hebel liegen bei maximal 1:30 für private trader.

Das handelsangebot umfasst unter anderem fast 50 währungspaare, 20 indizes und zahlreiche aktien aus vielen ländern. XTB zeichnet sich neben transparenten gebühren und einem großen handelsangebot vor allem durch viele informationen aus. Handel über metatrader 4 und xstation 5

Der handel erfolgt über zwei modernen plattformen, den metatrader 4 und die xstation 5, die vor allem für den aktienhandel verwendet werden kann. Auch der agena trader ist bei XTB genannt. XTB unterstützt seine trader mit vielen erweiterungen, die vor allem im CFD- und forexhandel beim erkennen von trends und dem verfolgen aktueller marktereignisse hilfreich sind.

Den metatrader 4 kennen viele trader bereits. Die plattform zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine analyse-tools zum erkennen von chartmustern und trends aus. Auf diesem weg erhalten trader unterstützung beim finden von ein- und ausstiegspunkten. Über den metatrader können auch automatisierte strategien umgesetzt und auf ihre wirksamkeit hin getestet werden. Dafür benötigen trader keine programmierkenntnisse. Viele skripte sind in der MQL4-community zu finden.

Über die xstation 5 können trader aktien-orders besonders schnell aufgeben. Außerdem finden sie zahlreiche hilfreiche tools wie einen aktienscanner. Auf diesem weg lassen sich passende wertpapiere besonders schnell finden. Dazu kommen beispielsweise ein kostenloser trading-rechner oder werkzeuge für das chart-trading.

Handel mit zwei marktmodellen

Bei XTB können trader über den STP-handel oder ein marktet-maker-modell handeln. Orders können somit auch als markt-orders ausgeführt werden. So ist eine direkte marktausführung möglich. Hervorzuheben sind die zahlreichen schulungsmaterialien, die sich an einsteiger und fortgeschrittene richten. Diese sind in der trading academy zu finden und richten sich an trader mit unterschiedlichem vorwissen. Während anfänger mehr über die grundlagen des tradings oder die einzelnen handelsplattformen lernen, können fortgeschrittene ihr wissen über handelsstrategien ausbauen. Das wissen kann dann auch gleich über ein demokonto ausprobiert werden. Auch fachartikel oder unterstützung von experten werden von XTB zur verfügung gestellt.

Standard-konto und pro-konto bei XTB

Der broker bietet ein standard-konto und ein pro-konto an. Beide gibt es auch in varianten für professionelle trader. XTB gibt keine mindesteinlage vor und verzichte auf kontogebühren. Die unterschiede zwischen beiden konten liegen insbesondere bei den spreads. Über das pro-konto können trader schon ab 0,1 pips handeln und beim standard-konto ab 0,8 pips. Beide konten ermöglichen den handel mit kleinen handelsgrößen ab 0,01 lots. Auf einige basiswerte fallen beim pro-konto kommissionen an.

Ein- und auszahlungen können trader auf verschiedenen wegen vornehmen, unter anderem per überweisung und kreditkarte. Bei auszahlungen sind aber gebühren möglich. Liegt die gewünschte auszahlung unter 200 euro, fallen zehn euro gebühren an.

Fazit: GKFX nicht mehr in london

GKFX hat sich infolge des brexits aus london verabschiedet. Trader, die bisher unter dem dach von GKFX UK aktiv waren, handeln nun bei GKFX europe. Der maltesische broker AKFX financial services agiert als ausführender anbieter. Da dieser von der finanzaufsicht der mittelmeerinsel reguliert wird, gelten für die kunden von GKFX weiter die EU-regeln.

GKFX bietet ein ähnliches angebot wie XTB. Bei XTB können anleger zahlreiche handelsklassen aus einer hand über moderne plattformen traden. Das gesamte angebot kann über ein demokonto getestet werden. Hervorzuheben ist sind die vielen schulungsmaterialien, die auf anfänger und fortgeschrittene ausgelegt sind, sowie der kundenservice, der bei der deutschlandfiliale in frankfurt zu erreichen ist.

I guess its sad as I've seen this company at its best and now at its worst. Its shocking when you see the people you care about treated so badly, leaving them with no option but to leave and seek solace in another company, praying that its nowhere near as awful as GKFX. Management will sit and nod their heads to your gripes, but they know that its pointless as the company is micro managed by turkey. Everything is managed by turkey, there is no room to breathe. They require each and every person to bring their A game with little or no support. At one point the most powerful department in the company was rendered useless due to the lack of authority granted to carry out their contractual duties. They genuinely don't care about their employees, by their own admission anyone is replaceable, and at a drop of a hat. Expect no reward for working hard or for loyalty, that concept is as foreign as their IT department! You have to jump through hoops to work towards a 'bonus', what a sorry affair that turned into. Fill out a 14 page document, sit and discuss your career aspirations, its actually giving me migraine thinking about it. You work the entire year and go home with such a sad salary and a bonus that after tax is quite frankly an insult. They are at a stage where people leaving is a blessing as they don't have to pay an iota of redundancy. If you are considering employment with GKFX, think again, and again. They don't pay market rate for any role. You know that saying, if its too good to be true it usually is, well if by any chance you get the salary you want, expect that to be the last upgrade you ever get. After leaving GKFX one realises how bad they were, my only sadness stems from the fantastic people I left behind. The management do not make this company what it is.. The people do, they work hard, put up with so much and get treated worse than macdonalds staff on a friday night. Unless you count the monthly fruit basket 'making it in life' I would avoid. The mental stress, the lack of respect, the lies and attitude of the upper management will remain the same, with or without you. Once upon a time I could proudly say where I worked, it was never perfect but at least everyone was in the same boat and it made us strong. New employees will never understand how badly it has derailed. Those days are over, gone with it the professionalism you would expect from a firm of this supposed stature.
